Why it matters
Nothing changes operationally today, but a completed deal would concentrate two important routes to online grocery shoppers, retailer technology and brand-funded media.
What changed
DoorDash signed a definitive agreement to acquire Instacart for $65 per share, valuing the equity at approximately $17 billion. DoorDash expects to retain Instacart’s brand, app and enterprise products.
The proposed combination joins DoorDash’s delivery network with Instacart’s grocery fulfillment, retailer technology, advertising and AI tools. The companies say grocers could use the combined capabilities across marketplace apps and their own websites.
The transaction is expected to close in late 2027 or the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. Until closing, DoorDash and Instacart remain separate companies.

What it changes for sellers
Retail media may consolidate
A future combined platform could change how brands buy sponsored search, measure attribution and reach shoppers across restaurants, convenience and grocery.
Smaller grocers may gain more tools
Independent and regional retailers could gain access to fulfillment, first-party digital storefronts and advertising capabilities that are difficult to build alone.
Platform dependence becomes a risk
Brands should preserve retailer-owned relationships and data instead of treating a third-party delivery marketplace as the account itself.
Next move
What to do now
- 1
Establish a clean baseline for sales, media spend and return across Instacart and DoorDash.
- 2
Preserve campaign-level data and retailer-specific results before any future platform migration.
- 3
Watch for changes in ad inventory, fees, measurement and retailer participation—but do not change current programs yet.
- 4
Keep digital demand diversified across retailer sites, marketplaces and owned consumer channels.
This is a signed agreement, not a completed acquisition. The companies remain independent until closing and the transaction may face a lengthy regulatory review.
