Why it matters
Store-opening headlines often blur net-new distribution and transferred distribution. These two announcements are a clean reminder to identify which kind of opportunity is actually on the table.
What changed
Whole Foods Market will open a 37,636-square-foot store in Midlothian, Virginia on November 19. The company says the store will carry more than 390 products from local suppliers and becomes its third location in greater Richmond and seventeenth in Virginia.
One day earlier, Whole Foods will open a roughly 40,000-square-foot store in West Chester, Ohio. That location replaces the existing Mason store and is expected to carry more than 300 products sourced from the Midwest.
The dates are close, but the selling implications differ. Midlothian adds a door and may create incremental initial-order opportunity. West Chester is a relocation, so incumbent authorization, inventory transfer and item continuity matter more than an assumed new-chain win.

What it changes for sellers
Midlothian is an opening-order question
Brands with Mid-Atlantic authorization should verify initial orders, shelf placement and field coverage. Local suppliers should also confirm whether the opening assortment is already locked.
West Chester is a continuity question
Existing Mason suppliers need to verify item transfer, routing, inventory and reset timing. A relocation can still create merchandising opportunity, but it is not automatically an incremental authorization.
Local counts show meaningful regional shelf space
Together the stores cite more than 690 local or regional products, reinforcing the importance of local supplier readiness alongside national programs.
Next move
What to do now
- 1
Ask the buyer or broker whether Midlothian initial orders are complete and which categories still have local or seasonal flexibility.
- 2
For West Chester, confirm the old Mason store number, new store number, PO routing and whether authorizations transfer automatically.
- 3
Schedule field coverage for opening week and the first two replenishment cycles, not only the grand-opening day.
- 4
Update door lists and forecasts separately: add Midlothian; replace Mason with West Chester.
